Our History

In the early 1900s, Italian immigrants came to the United States in search of opportunities that were not available in their homeland. Many settled on the south side of the railroad town of Dilworth, Minnesota, near the train station where they found work as laborers. This close-knit neighborhood became known as Little Italy.

The families who settled there brought with them the customs, traditions, and values of Italy. Over time, Little Italy developed into a vibrant community built on faith, family, hard work, and shared celebrations. Among the traditions they cherished was the celebration of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a devotion they carried from Italy and continued to honor in their new community.

Among those who grew up in Little Italy were John Verdi and Elizabeth (Sybil) Costello. Raised across the street from one another, their families shared a close bond. After John returned home from military service, he and Sybil were married and went on to build a life together in Dilworth. Their marriage, family, and devotion to tradition became part of the enduring story of Little Italy.

As the decades passed, the community changed, but the traditions associated with Little Italy remained an important part of family life. In the home of John and Sybil, family recipes and Italian cooking traditions continued to be shared and enjoyed. For our family, Sunday often meant spaghetti and meatballs, time spent together, and recipes passed down from generation to generation. We were fortunate to grow up with these traditions and to learn from the example our grandparents set.

Today, Verdi's Italian Market exists to honor that legacy. Our mission is to preserve and share the recipes, traditions, and flavors that began in Italy, were carried to Little Italy in Dilworth, and have remained a part of our family ever since. Through every seasoning blend and family recipe, we hope to offer a taste of our history and the traditions that have brought generations together around the table.

Enjoy.
